Two schools of thought on choosing a domain:

Go unique and brand vs. Prime Domain
Many webmasters choose to pick a unique domain name and brand it. In fact, most big players have chosen to go with branding over a prime domain.
Yahoo makes no sense at all, but people have no problem remembering it.
MSN. Microsoft could have chosen a prime domain, but instead chose to brand "MSN".
Monster has spent millions branding their domain. They could have spent those millions buying a prime domain, such as "Jobs.com" or "Employment.com".
Google...Was this even a word?
AltaVista is another branded domain.
Lycos...What does this mean?
These are a few of the most highly visited domains on the Internet.
On the other hand, some companies choose prime domains. One example is construction.com, which was reportedly sold to Mcgraw Hill for $1.5 million.
Another is Business.com,which was recently sold for a staggering $8 million.
(Side bar: Can you imagine the amount of branding you could buy for $8 million?!)
Some others:
AsSeenOnTv.com - $5.1 million
Wine.com - $2.9 million
Autos.com - $2.2 million
Express.com - $1.8 million
Wallstreet.com - $1 million
Rock.com - $1 million
Websites.com - $970,000
Drugs.com - $830,000

That's a lot of money spent on buying a domain instead od branding. Of those spendy domains, I've never been to any other those domains except construction.com.
So what do you think? Better to brand or buy prime?

I just would use whatever my company's name was (www.newsbyteens.com or www.intrepidstudios.com etc etc).

Well, in my case I like a little of both. We got the domain webmaster-forum.net because the search counts for "webmaster forum" are relatively high, but we'd also like to brand the domain by providing useful info and services.... But for right now it's just a forum. 8)

the web master forum search numbers are high alright; but it is "web master forum", not "webmaster forum".

I personally prefer unique domains. How easy is remembering Napster?
But if they were free-music-downloads.com nobody would remember. Make up some silly name and run with it!

I am pretty sure the search term would be "webmaster forum" and not "web master forum"
overture does some strange things when it displays results. It doesnt differentiate between singular and plural amongst other things.
Of course I could be wrong, but most people i know write webmaster as one word.

Yup. That Overture search term suggestion tool isn't the best. I tried out the tool for Britney Spears, but it suggested "britney spear", no "S", and so I put that into my page titles... No traffic yet.

Most searches are done in the plural. That's Webmaster School 101 stuff.
