Web site awards.
Does anyone around here ever apply for website awards, recieve them, or give them out?? I am thinking about creating a website design award from my site, just wanted to know how popular they actualy are now. I remember they use to be a fairly big deal but i do not see them that much anymore.

Most website awards are just a scam. Pay $10 and you're guaranteed an award.
I wasn't planning on charging for it..........

Yeah, sure. j/k
I was just mentioning, most of those awards are like that. One of our really bad sites won an award, but to recieve it you have to pay $30 for the plaque. ...

I never knew what to search for in google to find the awards. I'll have a look at those suggested. Awards are cool, but the problem is that they can be really meaningless too. If 'Joe Blogs' gives me webdesign of the year award so what, know one knows who the award giver is or what their authority is. If a widely recognised computer magazine (for example) gave you an award on the other hand it would practically be an endorsement bound to give you a stream of visitors.

Here are some awards my old design won.. when I thought awards were cool. 8) http://www.biltright.com/awards.html
The top 3 are actually pretty decent ones to get... the rest are pretty meaningless. Maybe the top 4 would make it in a current list now... but probably not. The Hawk award is actually pretty tough to get.. or at least it was.. and then you get submitted to Eagle which I never did. The Golden Web Awards - IAWMD is an excellent one.. it used to be free to submit.. just charged for plague of names or whatever. Being my site has construction and real estate related content the 3rd one is not too bad. At least it got me a link on their site. The 5th one down is not too bad either.. at least they rated the site in several areas and didn't just give a gold.

when I thought awards were cool
so you agree that the awards are pointless self flattery?

Pretty much.. if there was an entity that actually had a set rules and stuck to them.. they might not be. But I don't see that anywhere. It could be like the Grammies for the internet or something. Jimworld.com (not sure about link to him) has a pretty good award system, or used to.

hmm, ok, still don't think I will bother, seems more like fluffing ur own ego than anything beneficial in a marketing sense. If you have a portfolio of work that can be useful in showing people what ur able to do.

Yah...that's the best way. Awards don't mean diddly-squat but they are nice :)
